About Brian Coyle

Brian Coyle was a community leader and a gay activist. He was born in Great Falls, Montana, raised in Moorhead, Minnesota and studied at the University of Minnesota. Coyle was a member of Students for a Democratic Society and a writer for the Minnesota Daily. He originated the Free University, directed the National Campaign to Impeach Nixon, and founded the Progressive Roundtable.

Coyle served three terms on the Minneapolis City Council where he concentrated on housing, human rights, the environment and transportation and served as council vice president. Coyle told the public he was HIV positive in the year of his death.

His contributions have been honored with a community center and community gardens that bear his name, and his papers are maintained in a collection at the Minnesota Historical Society. Since 1991, the Human Rights Campaign has been pleased to present its highest award in memory of the life and work of Brian Coyle.
